Comments from guests who have stayed at Kenmare Fáilte Hostel:

October 2019
Hi Maureen and Aoife,
On behalf of myself and all the backpackers that enjoyed a great weekend in your hostel, I want to thank you both for your great hospitality and kindness and for your lovely welcome to Kenmare over the weekend.
Everyone was on a high over the weekend and there was a great buzz about.  They loved the meetings around the table in a lovely and warm atmosphere.  Also a thank you to Monica for her friendliness and for being so helpful to us.
I hope ye will enjoy yer well deserved upcoming break.
We hope to see ye again in the near future.
All the best
i stayed at the Kenmare Failte Hostel from the 16th to 18th august 2019 and it felt that you never left home because the hostel has a homely feel and the management make you right at home. and is central to the town of kenmare. i had the most relaxing stay. i would rate the hostel 10 out of 10 . and what one word can i say about Aoife but AMAZING . it is well worth the stay .
we stayed here for one night , 8 of us in total. we got an amazing welcome from Aoife , she helped us cook our evening meal. The hostel and rooms are exceptionally clean. it is an ideal hostel for cyclists as they have a great bike shed to store the bikes, and overall great facilities and there was another group of cyclists staying here too. I would highly recommend this hostel

I stayed here for two nights with a group of 12 cyclists . All of us were very happy with the Failte Hostel, the accommodation was clean and spacious. There was a lock up facility for our bicycles, an air dryer was also available to dry wet and damp clothes. There is a very well equipped kitchen with a full supply of all cooking utensils. There was a supply of free tea/ coffee/ bread/ biscuits, butter, jam etc for use by all visitors. Overall a great place to stay with very friendly host Aoife and her Mum.

August 2017

I stayed there with my sister, in a (lovely) en suite bedroom, on our hiking trip around the Kerry way. Even though we stayed in many places, that one was just incredible. The lady at the reception took our wet items and put them in a dryer, then she gave us a tour of the hostel and the facilities. Both the kitchen and the common room are extremely cozy and clean, and the family who runs it is extremely welcoming. In general, we loved our staying there, both for the excellent facilities and the positive vibes around. We don’t hesitate to recommend the place

Great placw to stay over for the night. Very busy and popular with families and couples. Right in the heart of Kenmare. All facilities available. Clean place and friendly staff. Great place to start a hike on the peninsula

Stayed here for one night while touring Ireland with my cousins. The hostel was clean, room was quiet, staff were friendly and helpful, and the place was well-located in the center of Kenmare.

Parking was a bit of a challenge as we got there late in the day and both the hostel and public lot were full, but we were able to park across the street. Great value for the money and location.

Wasn’t sure what to expect. Family of 6. Booked 2 rooms. Welcoming and owner run. Very spacious in bedrooms and kitchen etc and despite been full was not overcrowded. Great to use as a base for exploring Kerry.

This is an excellently run hostel. It is clean with good kitchen and good rest room. even the choice of books available for reading are excellent with a focus on local history. The hostel is right spot on in the middle of everything. There is a choice of rooms from dormer to on suite rooms with the prices varying but good value.

I have visited here with wife any young child for 7 year in a row. The ‘other’ hostel in town become a launderette about 8 or 9 years ago and I’m sure some of the budget accommodation over the pubs may be OK, but expect noise. The reality is this handsome Georgian building is right in the centre of town and cannot be more conveniently located for the restaurants and bars. Friendly staff. Excellent reading material downstairs in a vintage drawing room, both flyers and books. Lovely old Kitchen with complimentary tea, coffee, cereal and toast. I’ve never been in the dorms but the ensuite rooms are quiet with no noise; there is no bar on this particular street. This is a busy tourist town that acts as a gateway to 2 peninsulas and is a heritage town in it’s own right. Accommodation is limited at peak times as it is not possible to build new large hotels in the town, itself, without ruining the look of Kenmare. So do book as far ahead as possible.

2 July 2017

My daughter and I stayed here for two nights in a private room. It is in a very convenient location to the center of Kenmare and close to free parking. There was free breakfast and the other guests were very considerate.

Comfortable well equipped hostel in a great location – good parking available beside the nearby Garda Station. The proprietors are very helpful and welcoming so the hostel is well named. Spotlessly clean with oodles of hot water in excellent showers. Sturdy wooden framed bunk beds in roomy dorm with a selection of other room types also available. Excellent Wi Fi and the kitchen has a working AGA on which one can cook scrambled eggs beautifully. A mature and very well maintained building that has great character. A short walk to shops, bars and Quinlan’s excellent fish restaurant.
I’m very much looking forward to returning soon.

super location, super friendly and super well equipped! We travelled in a group of eleven for a hiking trip and it was perfect. Comfy beds, decent showers, two kitchens and an impressive sitting room. Staff were lovely.

Stayed there recently in a group of 11 friends. It’s a big house with lots of space and big bedrooms. Plenty of communal space for us to sit around the table for a cup of tea.

The welcome from Aoife and Maureen was fantastic – a genuine and rare warmth. I’ve stayed in quite a few hostel’s throughout Europe and I’s say this was the best I’ve stayed in.

I was taking part in the ring of Beara cycle and checked in early evening with no issues. The hostel is very clean and tidy and in close proximity to restaurants, pubs and shops. The hostel has a facility to secure your bicycle which is great as I was afraid to leave in car overnight. There are a few free car parks within walking distance of the hostel. Great washing facilities in the hotel and plenty of hot water. Very friendly family run hostel. I will definitely stay here in 2018 ring of Beara cycle.

we were a large family group, with a big span of ages and requests–and all our needs were met–the large well-equipped Warm kitchen was perfect for catering for a crowd–and the central location meant that we could hop out and visit the local restaurants and bars with ease—and the cosy living /TV room was ideal for those who wanted to sit in and chill

I stayed at the Hostel for one night while walking the Kerry Way.

This is a fair sized hostel. It has a well equipped kitchen with tea, coffee and milk provided.

I had a room with ensuite. It was a large room with a double bed and bunk bed. Plenty of space though sparsely furnished. A slight downside with the bathroom showers is that the showers are push button and the temperature is set, you cant adjust it.

Linen and a doona/duvee are provided. Towels arent provided but you can hire them. There is free WiFi which worked well.

The hostel is ideally located on the corner of Shelbourne Street and Henry Street the latter being the main source of pubs and cafe options. It is about 300m off the Kerry Way. The best way to find it coming off the trail is to walk directly along the trail to the centre of Kenmare (at the village green) then walk up Henry Street on your right. The hostel is on your left on Shelbourne Street just where the two streets meet.

The price was very reasonable compared to other hostel options on the route.

Taking account of location and price I think this is a Very Good for a Hostel

We had the opportunity to stay here for only one night to launch our drive through the ring of Kerry. Great, no nonsense, clean and somewhat romantic older place but modern in conveniences.
We had an ensuite room which was spacious and clean. The room was ready when we got there so we dumped our bags and explored all the cool places to dine and the cool shops in town. Great location with public parking just a couple doors down across from the petrol station.
They’ve got rules.
Keeps the place tidy and well managed.
We would definitely stay there again.

The room was clean and comfortable and the shower / bathroom area was clean and well decorated. The kitchen is a dream with the AGA cooker and the high quality cooking pans and equipment. Would we go back? most definitely. We arrived late, tired and hungry and maureen made us feel most welcome

Good hostel with large fully equipped kitchen and nice old furniture. It’s clean but they never cleaned the room while we were there. The location is centrical. Free tea and some snack is also available.

We stayed at Failte Hostel for a few nights and it was great. Clean, spacious room for three, nice view of the yard, quiet despite being on the streets intersection, easy to find, cozy common room, a great selection of books to read, spacious and very well equipped kitchen, helpful and polite staff, good wifi signal.

5 of 5 starsReviewed 7th August 2014

Our short flight from England was delayed…we made it to the Failte Hostel at around 11pm on a Wednesday.

A telephone number found on the front door with clear instructions to call should no-one answer after knocking.

Maureen, the hostel owner arrived within minutes of our call with friendly open arms, welcoming us to Kenmare.

We were guided through the hostel, Maureen pinpointing necessities, to our room.

Located on a junction there was inevitable noise from traffic though being really honest, this caused us no problems at all. The weather meant our window had to stay open though due to the amount of walking/fresh air etc we took no rocking to sleep.

A fantastic location meaning minutes walking to the cafes/restaurants and pubs.

Such a friendly town, perfectly located for the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Beara.

I have to say that this hostel is definitely among my favourite after staying in many Irish Hostels over the years.

Many thanks to Maureen and Monica for making us so welcome. :)

I just got back from a three week backpacking trip around Europe and every time I entered a new hostel I found myself wishing it was more like the Failte Hostel. I chose to stay in Kenmare because it was my great-grandmother’s hometown, and when I told Maureen, the owner, this she immediately got on the phone and found my cousins for me within a half hour. Her kindness then alone made my stay, but her advice on places to see while I was in Kerry and the friendliness of everyone at the hostel made me feel at home. Everything was clean and welcoming in the hostel itself, and it’s right in town which is perfect for activities. I could walk everywhere in Kenmare. I’ll definitely stay again if (when!) I return!

We stayed at the Fáilte recently as part of a small cycling group and were really pleased.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable with plenty of hooks for hanging clothes, something other hostels lack. The kitchen facilites are superb and the Aga is always on so even on a miserable wet day the whole place is cosy. And clean, the bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen are all so spotless. There are bike racks outside. If you don’t want to cook-in then all the restaurants and cafés and pubs of Kenmare are on your doorstep. And the staff is always friendly and helpful. Having the owners on site rather than a warden makes a huge difference. Kenmare is a great spot for cycing, hillwalking for just a weekend away, and the Fáilte is definitely the place to stay

“My Favorite Hostel In Ireland”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 2 September 2013

I have mountain-biked over 2,000 miles in Ireland staying in numerous hostels and campgrounds. The Failte Hostel in Kenmare is my absolute favorite. The location is excellent. The rooms are large, airy, clean, and have the best beds. The bathrooms are spotless and the WiFi access is free with a good signal. The staff are very friendly and helpful as well. There are several bike racks in the rear to securely store your ride and a bicycle shop right across the street if you need some work done. This hostel is easily my #1 recommendation in Ireland.

“Just perfect…highly recommended!”

Stayed for two nights with a group of friends from Limerick to walk in Gleninchaquin Park. The accommodation is warm, spotlessly clean and very spacious. We got a lovely warm welcome to the Kingdom from the owners! The hostel is a perfect location for Kenmare’s cafes, tea shops, art galleries, pubs and restaurants. We will definitely be back!

“Best hostel I’ve ever stayed in”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 31 July 2013 NEW

This independent hostel in Kenmare town is clean, organised, homely and spacious – all in one. The owner is friendly and welcoming. I especially liked the different eating areas so that we were not intruding on other guests when we ate our fish and chips, noisily, after a lovely day’s cycling. The hostel has bike parking, albeit uncovered and the other facilities leave nothing to be desired.

We had a four-person room and it was very spacious – most hostels would have fitted four more beds in that room.

Room Tip: As well as dorms there is a range of private rooms.

“cozy, friendly hostel – highly recommended”

5 of 5 starsReviewed 7 May 2013

There were around 15 of us (university students) who visited, and they were incredibly accommodating here and made us feel very welcome to Kenmare. They gave us some great tips on where to go and made sure that we felt at home. The hostel itself is located in a perfect spot, right on a corner of one of the main streets in Kenmare, and it has a really cozy feel, with a kitchen and a living room with a fireplace. Everything was very clean and classy, and we had an amazing stay here. HIGHLY recommended – stay here if you have the chance!

“friendly, affordable and clean hostel”

I stayed at this hostel with UCC Choral Society and my choir from 30th November to 2nd December 2012. We found this hostel to be affordable, clean and the staff were freindly and accessible. The facilities, such as the kitchen were perfect for our needs. The rooms are beautiful, rustic and traditionally Irish. The hostel also has a great location as we were situated in the middle of the town. I would definitely reccommend this hostel to anybody who wants to stay in Kenmare.

Very friendly family run hostel – would definitely recommend
This is a very friendly family run hostel, we found all the staff very helpful and friendly. The kitchen had excellent facilities. The rooms were clean, and provided good value for money. would definitely recommend this hostel. The hostel is on the corner of the main street, perfect for shops and restaurants, and only a few minutes walk down to the jetty/sea.

Absolute top hostel in Ireland (August 2012)
We’ve been there last week with a Scout group without reservation and have been welcome extremly warm. We got every help we need in a case of illness and are highly exalted about staying in this hostel. Compared with other hostels in Ireland a first class hostel.

“Great place to stay in Kenmare!”
Great hostess, a great place to stay, and affordable too! Close to town and park. Maureen was fantastic and a helpful source of information for exploring Kenmare. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you!

  • 100% Great hostel. Beautifully laid-out building. Good kitchen and a common. Very friendly staff. Top marks.
  • Everything is well organized and kept clean and tidy at all times. The rooms and bathrooms are very clean as well. The place is quiet and very well situated in the colorful town of Kenmare. You can’t be disappointed by FAILTE HOSTEL.

“Great hostel in a great location”

4 of 5 starsReviewed 9 August 2012

This is my fourth time staying here. Kenmare is a great base for discovering the beara peninsula, walking the Kerry way or cycling. The hostel is very clean, its right beside the centre of the town but not too close that it gets very noisy.

Its one of the few hostels I’ve stayed in where I’ve managed to have a hot shower any time day or night. The kitchen is big and spacious, I didn’t really make much use of it as I preferred to try out the local restaurants and cafes as there are lots to choose from in Kenmare.

Overall I enjoyed the stay in this hostel as you pretty much come and go as you please, and its all very relaxing. The hosts are very helpful and friendly. The hostel gets a wide mix of guests staying from young and old to families. Its wise to book ahead as it seems to get booked up on weekends.

Its good if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on accommodation.

August 2012

I stayed only 1 night at Kenmare Fáilte Hostel and I will be staying for longer the next time! I arrived on Sunday evening after a very long day and received such a warm welcome that I felt at home straight away.  The 4-bunk room was so clean and very spacious and also had a sink in it which was handy.  The bathroom was next to the room and again so clean and spacious.  The kitchen is lovely with free tea & coffee!  The Hostel as a whole is wonderful and I will recommend it to everyone I meet.  Thanks!

I write to let you know that our weekend in Kenmare was most enjoyable and that we were delighted with the hostel. We were especially delighted the warm kitchen at nighttime which was very conducive to having sing songs.

Thanks for your hospitality. Can you thank Monica and your daughter Aoife also.

Kenmare Failte Hostel – well done!
I have just returned from a cycling tour in Ireland where I have used
independent hostels. If you were to award star ratings to hostels in your
organisation the above hostel would achieve the maximum rating! I have
visited it 4 times in the last 12 years-it is very well run, spotlessly
clean and maintained to a very high standard both inside and out. The owner
is to be congratulated…John McEntee

Top Class Hostel in Great Location

5 of 5 starsReviewed 6 July 2011

The Fáilte Hostel in Kenmare has it all. It’s in a great location right in town. The rooms are spacious and mostly en-suite, with very comfortable beds. The kitchen/dining areas are really well equipped and there is a big lounge too for a quiet read. Outside there’s a BBQ area as well as bike racks. The wardens are really friendly, helpful and accommodating. We stay in many hostels regularly but this is our favourite. And it’s by far the cleanest hostel – it’s really spotless. The Fáilte is just a great place.
